Connectivity guide

How much internet speed do you need for VoIP?

VoIP needs less bandwidth than most people expect, but it does need a stable connection. Use the figures below, or the calculator on this page, to check your line.

By the Alltone Telecoms team. Updated 24 October 2026. About 2 minutes to read.

Bandwidth per call

CodecApprox. bandwidth per call (each way)Notes
G.711about 87 to 100 kbpsStandard quality, most common
G.722about 87 to 100 kbpsHD voice, same bandwidth as G.711
G.729about 24 to 32 kbpsCompressed, lower quality
Opusabout 20 to 60 kbpsAdaptive, used by many apps

Upload speed matters as much as download, because every call sends audio both ways. Add headroom for everything else your team does online.

Quality targets

  • Latency (one way): under 150 ms
  • Jitter: under 30 ms
  • Packet loss: under 1%

Improving quality

  • Use wired connections for desk phones where possible
  • Enable QoS on the router to prioritise voice
  • Avoid running VoIP through consumer VPNs
  • Consider a separate line for voice on very busy sites
